Kruschev beat the hell out of Kennedy at their Vienna summit because the failed Bay of Pigs invasion showed that the new president did not have the experience to control his intelligence and military leaders, and that he didn't have the guts to see the invasion through. Kruschev's perception of Kennedy emboldened him to put missiles in Cuba, but Kruschev came out of the Cuban missile crisis looking completely impotent. It wasn't until 6 months after USSR missiles had left Cuba that US missiles were quietly withdrawn from Turkey. By then, the average USSR and US citizen wasn't paying attention. Scoreboard Kennedy. Looks like Kennedy's victory is a good sign that a "D" next to a candidate's name on the ballot isn't bad for American strength.
